Super easy and fun 4th of July mason jar centerpieces made with dyed rice. Get the kids to help with this fun project! Great for the 4th of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day and other patriotic holidays. Create these simple centerpieces using plain white rice that is simply dyed with food coloring. You can also use other dye colors to create centerpieces for parties with different themes!
White long grain rice (2 cups rice makes 3 pint jars in each color)
1 tbs. white vinegar per color
Red and blue food coloring
Heavy duty Ziploc bag per color
Baking sheet with wax paper
Tea lights or small candle
Pour 2 cups of rice into a Ziploc baggie. Add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, then add about 3 to 4 drops of food coloring. You can always add more food coloring if needed.
Make sure zip lock bag is zipped securely. Shake and squeeze bag to color your rice.
After rice is colored, pour and spread onto cookie sheet to dry. Takes about 30 minutes.
Once your rice is dry, start with the red rice and scoop the rice into your mason jars. Put about 1/2 to 2/3 cups of rice for each layer into the jars.
Top with a tea light or small votive candle. If using a battery tea light, add a decoration and place into the rice.
You can also add a wired jar holder to hang your decorative mason jar.
